Every now and then, a debate over the decline in the popularity of read in Singapore pops up, and some arguments inevitably point out that most books in Singapore, barring local titles, remain prohibitively expensive for the general consumer. I agree. Wholeheartedly! Since I’m supposed to get back to my notes now (for the record, I’m referring to leisure reading material, as opposed to the academic, although they may at times overlap), I’ll cut this short.

The motivation for this post came about from my search for the book “The Audacity to Win” by David Plouffe. Without any discounts, it costs S$54.04 here, which is, pardon my French, bloody expensive.

Hence, I did what any rational modern consumer would do. I searched for alternatives online. Here are the numbers.

Buying from Amazon and shipping direct to my doorstep costs S$35.38.
Buying from The Book Depository and shipping direct to my doorstep costs S$39.25.
Buying from Open Trolley and shipping direct to my doorstep costs S$42.50.

Of the three, Open Trolley delivers within 4 to 7 days because it’s local, while The Book Depository (UK) takes 7-14 days, and Amazon (US) 18-32 days.

However, my sister wanted another 2 books, “Too Big to Fail” by Anthony Ross Sorkin, and “A Colossal Failure of Common Sense” by Larry Mcdonald, and since Borders SG sent me a discount coupon for 30% off 3 full-priced books, I thought we might as well support a traditional brick-and-mortar shop.

But it turns out that Borders doesn’t stock Plouffe’s book (OMGWTFBBQ?), so we got the other 2 for 20% off.

The unavailability is saddening, but the thing that really miffs me is that even with 30% off, the book, if bought locally (from Borders, Kinokuniya or Times), is still more expensive than Amazon Direct at S$37.83. The only perk, if it were available, is the instant gratification in contrast to the waiting time.

But since it’s the exams now, and I probably can only find the time for it after the 25th, I’ll probably go and try out The Book Depository. Amazon Direct (using the cheapest shipping option) takes far too long, and Open Trolley, while local (buy home-grown!), is a tad expensive and comes too soon. Haha.

So here’s the moral of the story: Always compare the online prices of the books you want against its list prices in local shops.

More next time.

PS: I know the GP content package thingy says there are other width points about libraries and ebooks, but I need to go off now! Plus they suck.

The date / time is not confirmed yet, but it's likely to be on the 22nd of Dec, morning. I'll be getting a huge farewell card and you guys can write messages when we meet up; do also bring along any small presents / tokens of appreciation that you'd like to give to Mr Ward.

When we were PC-ing a poem by DJ Enright some time back, Whitby was telling us about Enright's stint in Singapore as a Literature Professor. Apparently the whole incident was called the "Enright Affair", and as recently as 2004 it was invoked in the discussion revolving around the Esplanade. If you're doing culture for GP, maybe this might help. Haha.

Somehow I don't understand why there needs to be a shift from 'containment' to 'mitigation'. Isn't it better to both contain and mitigate?

It seems rather risky to me if we allow the schools to stay open as scheduled. Should more get infected and the virus mutates into a more malignant form, we're seriously screwed.

I was having a mini-discussion with my father about the 1-week self-quarantine scheme for students who have been to infected areas, and we weren't very convinced. Unless there's a way to actually enforce it, there will always be people who will go to school once it reopens. How many kiasu Singaporean parents will willingly keep their children at home for an entire school week?

Sorry if its too expensive, but its really the best we can do with 16 people going and the lack of good chalets. ( All the better ones at same price are mainly taken: Eg: Aloha Loyang). If you guys are wondering why need to pay so much, you guys gotta take into account our class size is halved, so everyone has to pay more! Sorry!

Oh yes, recently some people in our class (including me) have been discussing about dropping the BBQ and instead going for potluck, but i feel that a potluck is hard to manage and will be quite a flop, because since we are buying food from outside, might as well eat outside. And i think not having a BBQ is kind of making the chalet a bit pointless already, so please tag if you have any ideas.

Ordering of BBQ will be done on tuesday 23rd december if more than half the class does not oppose to it.

Message from the honorable supreme whatever class chairman:

Erm, ok so if you guys havent noticed, the current attendance count for the chalet is 17 people! WOOHOO. Erm. So that brings up the problem of lack of accomodation. For your info, the chalet is darn small, so there might not be space for everyone to lie on the bed without having to squish. (dont worry, the penguin dont sleep during chalets).

So for those who need their favourite nappy during the chalet, but fear that there might not be space, pleash bring your bloody own sleeping bags, or if your lame enough, bring your own tent and pitch at the beach. (editor's note: there's no need to bring a tent. if it doesn't rain you can just stone by the beach and look at the mermaids/mermen)

Else there's always the all-night taiti/blackjack/bridge, and horror movies!

Please remember that BBQ is on the second night, the 3rd of Jan. Make yourself free that night! This is the list of people and how many nights they are staying.

The chalet is on the 2 3 4 January. It is at costa sands, and the plan so far is that Chan's dad is booking it. However the problem is that its inconvenient for chan's dad to book it, so we are looking for someones parents or relatives who are NTUC members and is willing to book for us and come to check in on friday 2nd jan.

Since no one is updating I shall update.

I was randomly clicking around websites when I came upon this Wikipedia article on the Guillotine. It's a machine that they use to behead criminals.

Some portions caught my attention.

The first:

On April 25, 1792 the first victim of the device was a highwayman named Nicolas Jacques Pelletier. The crowds marveled at the machine's speed and precision.

The most interesting is this whole chunk on "Living Heads":

Audiences to guillotinings told numerous stories of blinking eyelids, speaking, moving eyes, movement of the mouth, even an expression of "unequivocal indignation" on the face of the decapitated Charlotte Corday when her cheek was slapped. Anatomists and other scientists in several countries have tried to perform more definitive experiments on severed human heads as recently as 1956. Inevitably the evidence is only anecdotal. What appears to be a head responding to the sound of its name, or to the pain of a pinprick, may be only random muscle twitching or automatic reflex action, with no awareness involved. At worst, it seems that the massive drop in cerebral blood pressure would cause a victim to lose consciousness in several seconds.[9]

The following report was written by a Dr. Beaurieux, who experimented with the head of a condemned prisoner by the name of Henri Languille, on June 28, 1905:

Here, then, is what I was able to note immediately after the decapitation: the eyelids and lips of the guillotined man worked in irregularly rhythmic contractions for about five or six seconds. This phenomenon has been remarked by all those finding themselves in the same conditions as myself for observing what happens after the severing of the neck...

I waited for several seconds. The spasmodic movements ceased. [...] It was then that I called in a strong, sharp voice: 'Languille!' I saw the eyelids slowly lift up, without any spasmodic contractions – I insist advisedly on this peculiarity – but with an even movement, quite distinct and normal, such as happens in everyday life, with people awakened or torn from their thoughts.

Next Languille's eyes very definitely fixed themselves on mine and the pupils focused themselves. I was not, then, dealing with the sort of vague dull look without any expression, that can be observed any day in dying people to whom one speaks: I was dealing with undeniably living eyes which were looking at me. After several seconds, the eyelids closed again[...].

It was at that point that I called out again and, once more, without any spasm, slowly, the eyelids lifted and undeniably living eyes fixed themselves on mine with perhaps even more penetration than the first time. Then there was a further closing of the eyelids, but now less complete. I attempted the effect of a third call; there was no further movement – and the eyes took on the glazed look which they have in the dead.[10]

It kinda reminds me of a lizard's tail which keeps wriggling even after it's detached.

Anyway, I did further googling, and found this video. Quite freaky.

Alright! This post is for all those who are in the same maths tutorial class as me.

Here are the 3 photos that we took (nearly) consecutively with Mr Tan today. All 3 have different expressions/poses, so I thought I might as well post all 3 up here.

I cropped the photos nearly panoramically because the top railing was a bit ugly, and a messy table was jutting out below. The colours are also post-processed because the original was too dull and boring. In addition, I've also added words and stuff to the photos.

Oh, and I've uploaded them without resizing, so you guys can download them.

Last thing, are we printing a copy for the teacher? If yes, which?

I'll vote for #2 or #3, because in #1 Chan's finger is poking Zifang's eye. I kinda like his expression in #2 :P

Here's a little something for all those who weren't there at YEC. This post is lifted entirely from my own blog because I'm too lazy to re-write.

I think I learnt quite a bit from covering yesterday night's Year End Celebrations, or otherwise named in a classy/cheem manner as C'est La Vie II: Unveiled.

1) Don't buy a ticket when you have free entry.

2) Flash kills the ambient lighting. Use ultra, mega high ISOs or rear sync flash.

3) The PA doesn't give a hoot about production-quality stage lighting, so you'll have to pray for the light to be right when the moment calls. I complained a little and they said they "randomed" it and that I'll have to "catch the right beat". Random got beat meh?

4) Bring earplugs or something to stuff in the ears when shooting in close proximity to the stage. I was standing next to the loudspeakers for some time and after that my right ear was ringing. Ouch.

5) Concert photography's not my cup of tea. I don't even have the right equipment.

Alright, enough of self-reflection. Here are the pictures. It's a quick and dirty selection from the hundred-odd.

Oh, and I've lowered the quality of the images because I observed that band pictures were often "kope-d" or stolen and used with without permission. Ask and you shall receive the high-res copies.

They had a bar in the hall! But it's rather expensive - $2 for a small plastic cup of soda water and something else. Haha. I'd rather pay for sparkling juice since alcohol's a no-no.

The dancers(?) on the T-stage in front. Fooled around with rear-sync, slow shutter speed and violent camera movements.

Here's a closer look.

The turn-out for the dance party. No, this wasn't shot early on. This was shot at 8pm. The brightness and blur is because of the long exposure. Okay la, later on there were more people who came to watch the bands. But I think the turn-out still fell short of expectations.

Since there was nothing to shoot on the dance floor, I got bored and started trying to photograph the projector.

Western dance was next. Screwed up this shot.

The first band that played was a collaboration between One Hot Minute and 3:45. Here's Paul from OHM on the lead guitar.

The first band was rather dead IMO. Probably because the floor was like a cemetery. They didn't really have the poses that photographers crave for too. I mean, ham it up for the camera a bit la. Paul did try at the end though, and I appreciated it. But I'm not posting those pictures.

Next band was Revival(?), the all-girls band.

Drummer.

I think it's the bass and rhythm.

Singer 2, although she was pointing 1.

Lead guitar I think.

Anyway, I didn't know any of the songs that the second band played. Haha.

The last band to play was Captain Caleb and The Love Machines. Pity they didn't play What I've Done.

Lead guitar. I kinda liked this guy because he has all the cool poses. But by then I was too tired and deaf to move and snap. Heh.

Great stage dynamics. But aiya, most of the time Caleb was behind me on the T-stage.

I kind of liked this shot although I cropped the elbows by accident. I just wish the two bright lights were star-shaped. That would be perfect.

I think these two people are the only two crazy enough to play tennis under the baking-hot 2pm sun.

And there was this mini Deepavali celebration at the Linkway just before YEC.

The emcees said he was a Vasantham Central singer or something. I wasn't really listening. Nice guy though.

What's a Deepavali celebration without dances? It's a pity that I didn't zoom out enough to ensure that the person's hand wasn't cropped. ):

Last but not least, there was traditional Indian food too.

Hi all! In case you haven't seen the publicity posters around school, the annual NJC Year End Celebration is coming up next Friday!

Called C'est La Vie II: Unveiled! (lol because last year was C'est La Vie) it promises to be some spectacular fun, maybe we should give it a shot for a class gathering too?

It's basically a dance party with food and drink stalls set up by the CCAs.

I can hear some of you protesting: BUT I DON'T DANCE. never mind la it's all in the name of fun!

Tickets are $12 a head, and they include many discount vouchers for well-known brands!

TA Block's New Windows.

Let's take a break from unglam photographs and explore the TA block's new windows! I was in school today and I discovered that they were installing windows in the TA block.

I don't mind windows because there's more ventilation, but I dislike those windows because:

1) The sunlight can stream in and at times it's a bit too harsh
2) You can't use your MP3 or PSP openly in class now that there are windows
3) The windows are the sliding roller types which will probably get stuck soon
4) Some people can no longer hide in class during assembly

Hey guys.

I just saw on KM that there will be tutorial venue changes due to the JC2/IP4 prelim exams. Those following my GELM combi shouldn't experience any switches. But those who aren't might need to switch. Please check KM!

As for the class photo shoot this Monday at the atrium at 10.45am, try not to blink when the strobes fire! And when it's the candid shot, smile as broadly as possible because it looks better on the fisheye they're using.

FtF is a shoe-designing contest organized by the NDC Committee. Each class with be given a SHOE to design according to this year's theme of "Working Magic".
Suggestions from HAT - "Experiment with the laces, the tongue of the shoe, have add-ons and pop up items (not to the point of irrationality though) and stay away from sensitive things like mas selamat and WW2."

Do discuss about the design when you're free!

Class flag
Each class will be given a piece of red cloth (1x1.5m) which they are supposed to design and paint a flag. This flag will represent their class at every house event. It's not due yet, and while we will most likely (or definitely) rely on the AEP to draw everything, we can give suggestions & ideas for the flag design. Also need painters! [: Not urgent, so think about the shoe first!
